The show starts with the fanfare with loud beats on
the Dholak, a drum played by the female members of the
troupe and the toot and whistling by the puppeteers
who produce sharp, trembling and shrilling sounds through
the rustic reeds they hold in their mouth. The exploits
of “Amar singh rathor” are most popular
theme of such shows. He appears at the court of Emperor
Akbar, along with other Hindu 'rajas'. A magician, an
acrobat, a horse rider, a snake charmer, etc perform
tricks and turns for their royal amusement.
The dialogues in the play are narrated by the female
members of the party through appropriate songs, accompanied
by beats on the drum to the perfect synchronization
with the movements of the puppets, the puppeteer responding
to the narration on the behalf of the puppets through
vibrating, whistling sounds blown out from his reed,
often punctuating with comic effects. The two hours
show, comes to an end with a resounding blare after
the audience contributes its mite.
