The later history of Rajasthan is a history of various
kingdom and their regular was with are another. It wasn’t
until the mid sixth centuries that the brave Rajputs
warriors par excellence came to dominate the region
and wrote the most glorious chapter of the history with
their blood and blade. Rajasthan saw the rise of Prithviraj
Chauhan, Maharani Padmini, Meera Bai, Rana Sangha, Rana
Pratap and sources of other names, which became hallowed
in folk memory. It was the period of fierce loyalties
and of death before dishonor. It is this period in the
history of Rajasthan that continues to live and the
proud inhibitions of this region and gives it a special
charm of its own, unmatched by any other place any where
in the world.
The people of Rajasthan live life to the hilt. After
hard work in the harsh desert sun and rocky terrain
whenever they take time off they let themselves go in
gay abandon. There is dancing, singing, drama, devotional
music and puppet shows and other community festivities,
which transform the hardworking Rajasthani in-to fun
loving and carefree individual. Each region has its
own folk entertainment, the dance style differ as do
the songs. Interestingly enough, even the musical instruments
are different.
Courses for students
Kinkini has special courses for college groups and art
lovers on Study Abroad programmes, for individual students
wanting specialized training, of for small groups. These
can be for Kathak, Rajasthani folk music and dance,
puppetry, or for a general understanding of Indian culture,
and for development studies.
Cultural study tour
Kinkini’s studies abroad programme introduces
to you this fascinating country through her arts, crafts
and culture, her socio-economic background and history.
The course work includes field trips to nearby villages,
to Kinkini projects for social and economic development
through performing arts. Kinkini’s artists are
highly skilled practitioners who also teach and share
their skills, knowledge and experience with students.
COURSES OFFERED
- Course 1 Folk Dance
Rajasthan has a wealth of folk dance which is alive
in its many villages and towns. This course will take
the students on a virtual trip across Rajasthan to
introduce them to dance and music traditions from
different districts. It will introduce them to the
festival or occasion when the dance is done, its religious
or social relevance, the meaning of the clothes worn
and associated information on other aspects like food,
fasting or rituals. Students will be required to learn
three dances like Ghoomar, Chari, Kalbeliya, etc .
Duration of the course : 1 month
- Course 2 Classical Dance: An Introduction
India has 7 important classical dance styles –
Bharata Natyakm, Kathakali, Kuchipudi, Manipuri, Oddisi,
Kathak and Mohini Attam. This course will take the
students on a virtual trip across India to introduce
them to dance and music traditions from different
states. This course is a historical look at the development
of these styles, their current status, new directions
in the styles, present performers of note and the
differences between the styles. Students will view
and discuss films of great performers and performances
and see live demonstrations of each style.
Duration of the course: 1 month
- Course 3 Kathak : An introduction
The Indian classical dance is one of the prominent
representations of our ancient rich heritage and culture
in the world. Kathak, north Indian style of classical
dance characterized by rhythmic footwork danced under
the weight of more then 100 ankle bells, spectacular
spin, and the dramatic representation of themes from
Persian and Urdu poetry along side those of Hindu
mythology.
Traditionally, Indian stories are told through movement
and dance, with great emphasis on expression and hand
gestures. Using the body as a medium of communication,
dance is perhaps the most intricate and developed
yet most easily understood art form.
This course is a historical look at the development
of Kathak styles, costumes, music, and current status,
new directions in the styles, present performers of
note and the differences between the styles. Students
will view and discuss films of great performers and
performances and see live demonstrations of each style.
Duration of the course: 20 days to one month
- Course 4 Instrumental Music
Rajasthan - the most colorful State of India. From
time immemorial this state has poured into the lives
of millions of Indians a stream of soul stirring rhythms
and resonance. This course offers beginners or more
advanced students the study of the Rattling Instrument
Khartaal The Autophonic Instruments Manjeeras , flute,
and percussion instruments – dhol, dholak, tabla,
matka and harmonium.
Duration of the course : 1 month
- Course 5 Traditional Indian Puppetry
Rajasthan has a long tradition of string, glove and
Rod puppets. The puppet is a popular source of amusement.
A community of agricultural laborers called “Bhat.
Traditionally associated with the art of puppetry
and originally inhabiting the areas around Nagaur
in the Marwar region, travels all around the countryside
in Rajasthan. They are referred to as the “Kathaputliwala.
This course will teach students the art of making
and operating puppets from Rajasthan.
Duration of the course : 20 days
- Course 6 Yoga:
Yoga forms the backbone of Indian movement and is
slowly becoming the most favoured form of relieving
stress body and mind. Students will learn hatha yoga,
and the breathing and chanting techniques for relaxation
and good health.
Duration of the course: 20 days
- Course 7 Arts for Change
Kinkini has used street theatre to talk to different
target groups about social issues ranging from gender
and religious discrimination to HIV and AIDS, maternal
mortality, environmental problems and justice and
human rights. This course will take the students through
all these projects. They will visit and work in a
rural area on one of the projects, observe it and
analyze the situation. They will watch videos and
hear from people involved with the projects. They
will be required to create a short performance piece
on a chosen issue.
Site: India (City of Bhilwara, Udaipur, Ajmer,
Jodhpur and several other locations relevant to the
study program)
Dates: August to February
Eligibility: Students individually
or through a consortium of universities preferred.
Level: juniors, seniors, grads, adults and teachers;
interest in development of traditional and modern
performing arts as relevant to different cultures;
no formal training essential.
Credits : Each of the courses mentioned
above will be approximately 20 days to one month and
will be inclusive of classroom and field-cum-project
studies. Kinkini will issue certificates to candidates
successfully meeting all the requirements.
Instruction : In English; the program
will also give an opportunity for students to familiarize
themselves with some local languages
Costs : $ 250 per credit or $ 3750
for 15 credits
Housing and Food: Accommodation close
to the campus with all adequate amenities for foreign
students will be provided. Vegetarian meals are available.
Internet connectivity is available and is on doctors
on the Kinkini’s panel.
The accommodation, breakfast and lunch cost $ 20 a
day and dinner can also be arranged .
